Leetspeak Translator

Type plain English to get leetspeak, or paste leet to read it. It runs in your browser and sends nothing to us.

Light leet swaps a, e, i and o. Full leet also swaps s, t, g, b and l. Capital letters stay as they are.

What We Check

  • Light leet swaps four vowels, so it stays easy to read.
  • Full leet swaps nine letters, for when you want it to look like a hacker movie.
  • Leet back to English turns numbers inside words into letters, and leaves real numbers alone.
  • Nothing you type leaves your browser.

What Is Leetspeak?

Leetspeak, or leet, is a way of writing that swaps letters for numbers and symbols that look like them. It started on early bulletin boards and online games. The name comes from "elite." People still use it for fun, for gamer tags and for inside jokes.

How to Read Leetspeak

Look at each number as the letter it looks like. Read the word out loud and your brain fills in the rest.

How to Write Leetspeak

Start light. Swap a, e, i and o in lowercase words, and leave names and short forms like DNS alone. That keeps it readable. When you want more, swap s, t, g, b and l too. Do not swap every letter, or nobody can read it, and that is no fun.

Tips for Newcomers

  • Read slowly the first few times. It gets fast after a minute.
  • Numbers on their own are still numbers. "20 staff" means twenty.
  • Our Stack Advisor speaks light leet. Type normal at any time for plain English.
