How We Build the Ideas

We join your words in the ways local businesses often do. That means your name alone, your name plus your trade, your name plus your town, and a few short add ons like "pro" or "co". We drop anything too long to say easily.

What "Looks Free" Means

For each idea we ask the Verisign registry, which runs .com and .net, if it has a record of the name.

• Taken means someone has registered it.
• Looks free means the registry has no record right now. It could still be a premium name with a higher price, and someone else could buy it first.
• Not checked means the lookup did not finish. Try again in a minute.

Before You Buy

• Say it out loud to a friend and ask them to type it.
• Check that no nearby business uses a name close to it.
• Search the US Patent and Trademark Office for the name. We are not lawyers, so ask one if you are unsure.

Common Questions

Is a .com better than other endings?

For a local business, usually yes. It is the ending most people type without thinking. Other endings like .co or .us work too, but expect some mail and visits to go to the .com by mistake.

Should I use hyphens in my domain?

Try not to. Hyphens are easy to forget when people say your address out loud or type it from memory.

Does this tool register the domain?

No. It only gives ideas and checks .com and .net. To buy one, use your registrar or ask us to register it for you.

Is the domain name ideas tool free?
